Acrylic on canvas
30x40cm
I have been making good progress on my A-Z of dog breeds, mostly down to generous dog owners that have kindly been supplying me with pictures of their pooches. I wanted to start getting really brave now that I am becoming more confident with my use of Acrylic, so for this portrait I really went to town with the background. I put a base layer of Magenta and Cadmium Red (hue) and worked into it with Cadmium yellow using an old woodblock for printing heart motifs. I then worked over that in a Pthalo Turquoise and Magenta mix and dripped water through it to create texture and interest. The onto Carla. I quickly sketched her in and using Titanium White and a Magenta/Pthalo Blue mix for the 'black' areas I blocked the basic shapes. Then using magenta and Pthalo Turq washes I added the shadows. I am really pleased with this painting and I feel I am starting to capture my style, concentrating on a limited palette.
