Linked to the sun and life itself, these golden blooms have become an emblem of resistance and remembrance—especially since 2022, when the world watched them transform into a sign of defiance and hope for the future. From marking moments of peace (like the planting at a former missile base) to honouring those lost in conflict, sunflowers are woven into the very fabric of Ukrainian culture—appearing in songs, embroidery, and everyday life.
When painting these sunflowers, I wanted to capture not just their beauty, but the strength and spirit they represent.
